I’ll never catch up to all the shenanigans that happened in the past week but I’ll try. Are DJs on my number one shit list? Yes!
Are sound engineers? Yes.
So how to we rate or charge for being tortured and injured. Are we being greedy? Are we being crybabies? Surely for most of you standing in front of a mega-watt speaker blasting out your favorite dance music or a favorite band is not torture but to me it is – even if it is some of my favorite dance music.
To some being poked with needles filled with a colored substance thousands of times is getting a tattoo, to others it is torture.
When we stand on a huge stage using equipment amplifying sound that really has no business being so loud (I cannot even tell you how many pop star celebrities you adore have horrible weak voices, yet you wouldn’t know because some sound engineer manipulates their sound) and the sound engineer couldn’t care less how our eq is balanced or whether we have enough mics or whether the mics are situated well for us to perform, this is torturing us; not only because it amplifies our sound poorly but because the sound engineer’s clear disparagement and disinterest in our contribution undermines our performance. This happened both Saturday and Sunday. It was a humiliating weekend!!
Did I mention that the MC of the show was talking – his mic still turned on – during the opening of our small set? If not for our friend, he may have drowned out the opening entirely. This illustrates my point: mikeless and using just normal energy and power the MC could never interrupt nor occlude our vocals during a performance. We’d easily drown him out. Only the borrowed amplification of a microphone gives him the power to invade our performance. Almost everyone who uses a microphone does this especially if the sound man is his or her ally.
Which brings up America’s Got Talent where the sound people actually took all of 2 seconds to decide how to mic me.
Sound people can actually make or break your career depending on whether they care about your performance or not. That’s unfair and stupid! What gives a sound person the right to judge? Their ego gives them the right.
